These are individual stand-alone workshops, and the fee is €30 per workshop, but there is an automatic discount if you sign up for more than one. Workshops take place on Wednesdays 8.00-9.15pm Irish Standard Time (3.00-4.15pm Eastern) An audio recording will be sent to participants in advance so you can familiarise yourself with the tune ahead of each workshop. I will also be offering another series on 'Newly-Composed Irish Tunes' as so many people have asked me about doing this series again (these will not be harp compositions but newly composed melodies by various composers in the Irish tradition which I have arranged myself). Participants sign up for a course of 4 workshops at their chosen level/topic, one per month, for a fee of €120. We will learn 2 beautiful Irish Christmas carols, Suantraí na Maighdine (Codail a Linbh go Sámh) and Dia do Bheatha. The arrangements are suitable for all levels as the melodies themselves are quite easy to play but we will look at alternative ideas for the left hand to suit early intermediate players to advanced. Don't worry if you can't attend on the day, the workshop will be recorded and shared with participants afterwards. Teaching will be by ear, with sheet music also provided. NOTE: These tunes are the same ones I taught at Somerset in July 2025 so if you attended the class then, you probably know them already! They are different to those taught in my previous Christmas Tunes workshop.

This beautiful Christmas carol is believed to have been composed by the late Seán Óg Ó Tuama from County Cork (although he himself stated the tune was a traditional melody), based on a poem by Aodh Mac Aingil O Cathmhaoil (1571-1626). It appeared in a book of songs edited by Ó Tuama in the 1950s, An Chóisir Cheoil. This arrangement was commissioned in 2020 by Cruit Éireann | Harp Ireland, the resource organisation committed to developing and promoting harping in Ireland (www.harpireland.ie). Carolan was a blind harper who travelled throughout Ireland composing tunes and songs in honour of his various patrons. Over 200 of his melodies survive. His style was influenced by the old Gaelic harp music, folk music and Italian Baroque music which was very popular among his patrons at the time. Length: 2 pages Level: Intermediate

Cúil Aodha (Coolea) is a village in the Gaeltacht or Irish-speaking area of County Cork. It is known for being the homeplace of the composer and musician Seán O Riada and his family, including his son Peadar, a well-known musician and composer in his own right. This jig is based on a song from that area ‘Amhrán an Tae’ (‘Song of the Tea’). The group Ceoltóirí Laighean added an instrumental section in their arrangement of the song (recorded in 1979), which became the source of the jig version commonly played today. It was later scored for harp and uilleann pipes by William Reeve for the pantomine Oscar and Malvina which was first performed in London in 1791. It was composed in August 1995 on the occasion of the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Listowel, County Kerry. Patrick decided it was too far to travel from Belfast to Kerry by bus, so he caught an aeroplane instead – hence the title! This is one of the most requested tunes from my first CD Between the Showers, and can also be found in my book Traditional Irish Music Arranged for Harp: Volume 1. This beautiful air dates back to 17th-century Ireland. It was collected by Edward Bunting at the Belfast Harp Festival in 1792 from the harper James Duncan. The full title is Eibhlí Gheal Chiúin Ui Chearbhaill (‘Fair Gentle Eily O’Carroll’). The original version is a song with lyrics in Irish, and it was also set with English words by the Scottish poet Thomas Campbell, titled ‘Lord Ullin’s Daughter’. The melody line itself is very easy, so it is possible for students to just play the melody line if they wish. Length: score 16 pages.; parts 8 pages Duration: 4:20

This traditional Irish slip jig (a type of dance in 9/8 time) was collected by Breandán Breathnach from the County Clare fiddle and concertina player John Kelly (1912-87), and is published in Ceol Rince na hÉireann, volume 1 (1963). John learned the tune from his mother Elizabeth, hence the title. This tune was originally arranged as a duet, but we have since worked on it with various harp ensembles. In those settings, we have experimented with adding a more basic part which consists of a simplified version of harp 1 (bass line only for the intro and ending, melody or melody with simple chords for the main body of the tune). Another option for the ending section (bar 81 onwards) is to leave out the semi quavers in the right hand part. Length: score 16 pages.; parts 8 pages Duration: 3.00

This arrangement includes both the version of “Danny Boy” usually performed today and the original harp air called ‘Aisling an Óigfhear’ (‘The Young Man’s Dream’ or ‘Vision’) from with “Danny Boy” was derived. This well-known air was first published in 1855 in George Petrie's The Ancient Music of Ireland, as an untitled melody from County Derry. The tune was contributed by Jane Ross from Limavady, who stated that she had collected the melody from an itinerant fiddler. It is believed that this melody may have been derived from an old harp air called 'Aisling an Óigfhear' ('The Young Man's Dream' or 'Vision'), which was collected by Edward Bunting and published in his 1796 General Collection of the Ancient Irish Music. He collected the tune from Denis Hempson (1695-1807) from Magilligan in County Derry, the last of the Irish harpers to play in the old style using long fingernails and playing a wire-strung harp. In this arrangement we have included both the well-known version of The Derry Air and also the old harp tune. Many songs have been set to the melody, but Danny Boy (composed by Frederick Weatherly in 1910) is the best known. This arrangement was commissioned by and is dedicated to the American Youth Harp Ensemble and Lynnelle Ediger-Kordzaia in Richmond, Virginia USA. Mp3](https://grainnehambly.com/product/music-from-ireland-and-scotland-mp3/) - This recording features of variety of Irish and Scottish airs and dance tunes, some dating back to the 17th and 18th century harp repertoire as well as recent compositions, performed on harps, concertina, whistle and bouzouki. Gráinne Hambly from County Mayo is an internationally recognised exponent of the Irish harp, and is in great demand as a performer and teacher, both in Ireland and abroad. She has attracted glowing praise for her live performances and recorded material, which brilliantly showcase what has been described as her ‘absolute mastery of the Irish harp’. Gráinne is a music graduate of Queen’s University Belfast. Originally from Glasgow, William Jackson was a founding member and creative tour de force of Ossian, which became one of Scotland’s best-loved traditional bands. In addition to being a renowned harper and multi-instrumentalist, William has gained an international reputation as a composer of music inspired by both traditional and classical elements. He is also a trained Music Therapist. Gráinne and William first performed together in October 2004. Since then they have toured extensively in the USA giving concerts and workshops, as well as performing at several international harp festivals. They have both released a number of solo CDs, but this is their first collaborative recording.

Solo Harp except for the title track which is a harp-guitar duet, and track 8 (harp duet with Gráinne’s sister Róisín). On it you can hear O’Carolan pieces, slow airs and traditional dance tunes.
