Wednesday Workshops – New Series 2023
€ 100.00
This January I will be offering a new series of workshops, divided by level. Workshops will be offered for intermediate and advanced levels, as well as a new series on Accompanying Irish Traditional Music which you can read more about below.
Participants sign up for a series of 4 workshops on their chosen topic, one a month from January to April for a fee of €100. Workshops take place on Wednesdays 8.00-9.15pm Irish Standard Time (3.00-4.15pm Eastern), with an option additional 15 minutes to play through previous tunes or practise the new tune slowly.
An audio recording will be sent to participants in advance so you can familiarise yourself with the tune ahead of each workshop. The workshop itself will be taught by ear, live on zoom and will be video recorded with an access link sent afterwards so you can review at your leisure or catch up if you couldn’t make the live workshop. Sheet music will also be provided.
See dates and further details below.
NOTE – The Accompaniment Workshop is now full, please email Grainne to be added to a waiting list
The dates for each series are as follows:
Intermediate Level:
Dates: Jan 18, Feb 8, Mar 8, April 19
In these workshops we will learn some easy Irish dance tunes and work on adding ornamentation (including cuts, triplets and trebles) to a basic melody. Ideas on how to develop your left hand arranging skills will also be covered. We will also look at how the written music differs from how tunes are played and other elements of Irish style.
Advanced Level:
Dates: Jan 11, Feb 1, Mar 1, Mar 29
These workshops are for anyone already familiar with learning by ear and playing Irish traditional music. We will work on more advanced ornamentation and arranging ideas as well as adding some new tunes to your repertoire!
Accompanying Irish Traditional Music (All Levels): [WORKSHOP FULL - email Grainne to be added to a waiting list]
Dates: Jan 25, Feb 22, Mar 22, April 26
Following on from a previous single workshop on this topic, I have decided to offer a series of 4 workshops so we can look at this area in more depth. The main focus will be on accompanying other instruments, but some of what we cover could also be relevant in terms of arranging and left hand ideas in general. The following areas will be covered over the course of the 4 sessions: the modes used in Irish music and their associated harmonic patterns; basic chord patterns and shapes; developing harmonic awareness; more complex rhythmic patterns to accompany various types of dance tune including jigs, reels, hornpipes; alternative chord progressions, walking bass and damping. We will also work on specific tunes as samples, and melody tracks (played on concertina) will be provided for you to practise along with. This workshop is open to all levels, but recommended for intermediate / advanced players.
